Steve West at the mall
Louisa, my parents and I went to Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax today so Louisa could see Santa and tell him she wanted a drumset and a baby doll. Fair Oaks has a surreal play area in which children romp around in stocking feet on giant plastic breakfast foods—sausage links, a waffle, bacon.
Louisa was happily playing and I was thinking about various things and looking at the mallgoers. Then I noticed this one tall, skinny guy with oversized sunglasses and messed-up curly hair walking to and fro outside the play area. And I just knew it was Steve West, former drummer for Pavement from Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain onward.
After a while he sat down in the play area, at the opposite end from me. I thought about whether to go over and ask if he was indeed Steve West. I deliberated for too long before taking this to heart and finally deciding to do it.
"Excuse me, but ... what's your name?"
"Steve."
"Steve..." (said in a leading way)
"Steve West."
He was at Fair Oaks with his daughter and his mom, who was doing some shopping, and he had been in town to see Franz Ferdinand at the Patriot Center last night. With some reservations, not wanting to seem the overeager fan, I sat down and talked with him for about 15 minutes. We discussed our kids (he has two, a daughter, 4, and a son, 18 months); life in Lexington, Va., where he lives; his work as a stonemason; and, of course, Pavement. I asked him if a reunion was likely, and he said it'd be up to Steve (Malkmus). He said Malkmus and Scott Kannberg have "a weird relationship" and that was an issue. I didn't know this, but apparently Kannberg didn't even play on a lot of Pavement tracks—when you hear two guitars on their songs, it's often Malkmus playing both parts. He even played bass pretty often, before Mark Ibold came along. Yet people often say the collaboration between Malkmus and Kannberg was central to the band. So Malkmus didn't like Kannberg getting a lot of attention he didn't deserve. (I hope I don't end up getting Steve West in trouble by posting this.)
After about 10 or 15 minutes he excused himself to find his mom, who was late meeting him, and walked off, but not before I (feeling like an idiot) took this picture.

And my social and political awareness has changed, and I'm much more involved in some of this type of stuff.
In fact, I know go to the Legislative Council, Hong Kong's lawmaking body,and report on its operation, interviewing politicoes and the like.
Right now i'm doing my thesis on Social welfare legislator Fernando Cheung, and his fight to bring minimum wage to Hong Kong. Should be exciting.
But that's what that kind of blog is for, for people to voice their disagreeements, hopes and struggles in Hong Kong. It's really helped me fuel my interests, as I get to see what people are thinking.
Oh, and I'm off to India at the end of December. New Delhi and periphery. Ting!

We've recorded an EP and two full-length discs at his home studio and Steve has lent his skills to production, engineering, and mixing. We've even collaborated on a couple oddball electronic-pop tunes.
He's a very down to Earth and gracious individual. His approachable eccentricity blends right in with us. Glad you got a chance to meet him.
The pic looks like a very typical excerpt from Steve's wardrobe!

The other thing I would like to relate to your anthropological interests, is that tribal groups in the Nicomar islands and in the Adanaman islands, are now extinct. They were wiped out when the tidal waves rushed over them.
