So I need to update, to maintain the narrative thread, here.
I did go to that MMW + Scofield show, and enjoyed it -- for a while. Then I got cranky. I felt old amid all the young neohippies, and the smoke was bothering me, and I was tired and coldish. And, worst of all, I observed up close the annoying habits of the neohippies. To wit: when MSMW would play their groovy funky shit with a beat you can bug out to, the crowd would bug out, and jiggle around. To their credit, they did jiggle. Most DC concert goers, as you might have noticed if you go to a lot of shows in DC, never, ever dance. It is apparently against DC statute. When Yo La Tengo took to the stage this fall and played their wonderful "Mr. Tough," which anyone with a smidgen of soul must dance to by universial fiat, did the crowd at the 9:30 Club dance? You guessed it -- no! How sad I was.
Well, the MSMW fans did dance. But at times the band dared to venture beyond groovy beats and explore more outish realms of jazz. The beat fragmented and the funky licks took a rest. At this point, the fans turned to their friends and started talking loudly. Grrr. I wanted to grab people and shake them and yell, hey, if all you wanted was a soundtrack to your gyrating, please stay home and listen to the CD and dance in privacy. Some of us would also like to listen.
Blah blah blah, like I said, I felt old and crabby. I think henceforth I'll only see jazz and jazz-type musics in places where I know that the crowd will be attentive, regardless of the funk quotient.
Another thing I wanted to point out: I wrote earlier about my realization, within a dream, that I was sick. There's actually a word for this, as I learned here: prodromal dreaming. Not much information about it elsewhere on the Web, though.
I've noticed lately that I haven't been having the super-deep, enriching sleep I was enjoying a few months ago. I'm not sure why. I recently started drinking a different tea in the morning. Maybe it's higher in caffeine? If that's the case, though, I must be really sensitive -- it's only green tea, and I've had to stop drinking all caffeine after noon or so because it disrupts my sleep. I don't want to give up caffeine entirely, but maybe I'll have to if I want to sleep like that.
I totally pwn the Google results for "Mike Janssen," though this darn weathercaster is tuffing me.

I haven't been sleeping well, either. Andd when I dream, it's never about sickness. IT's about karate.
