robots, salvia, miyazaki, etc.

Never trust robots.

Hi. Not much to read here recently other than delicious bookmarks, for which I'm not going to apologize. This is a quieter week than last, which is nice. After a lot of various meetings over beers and martinis, I'm sure I could use the break from alcohol. I've taken advantage of the lack of social engagements to catch up on DVDs that needed watching -- last night I watched Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa, for example. Another remarkable film by the Japanese animator. Miyazaki's films amaze me--the dense allegorical themes, the trippy dreamlike sequences, the bizarre lifeforms that populate them and evince his incredible visual imagination. Unlike his other films, Nausicaa also boasts a soundtrack full of bizarre analog-sounding keyboards that would go well on an Oneida album and sitars that enhance the psychedelic quality of the animation. Nausicaa probably isn't my favorite Miyazaki film, but it's hard to find anything wrong with it.

Two nights ago, I vanquished the final disc of the first season of Arrested Development. Enough has been said elsewhere about the genius of this show. I was pleased to see David "Gruber" Allen make a cameo in one episode and then, two episodes later, I noticed that Paul Feig directed the finale, so there were a few Freaks and Geeks tie-ins to geek out on.

And if you'll indulge more geeking out, I'll tell you that I switched from using Safari on my iBook to Firefox. I'm already quite pleased. Pages just look prettier, and of course I'm digging on the extension-y goodness. I'd only been holding out because I liked how the number of unread RSS items in my feeds would show up in my bookmarks bar in Safari. But I recently switched to Google Reader for RSS, so the Google Reader Notifier is handling that task well.

This podcast of a guy smoking salvia divinorum and describing the experience is rather compelling. I'd like to hear more of this kind of thing -- people experiencing various exotic things and giving a play-by-play. Someone should do one for Tantric sex. My favorite part of the salvia one is when he says it's better than seeing Cars at the movie theater -- "seeing a car say 'Dadgum!' 'Nine dollars, please.'"
