Notes on Jasper Johns exhibit
3/24/07

I put together these things
making a peak
from which I could climb no higher.

A painting as a record of something that happened -- not an aspiration to an ideal painting already in existence and transcribed to the canvas in parallel with some production, utility.

Music also (Cage). Chance techniques that make each performance unique and not a reproduction of an idealized "work."

A painting should be looked at the same way we look at a radiator. -- Johns

nice antidote to "obligatory beautiful feelings" -- who said that?

How much of what we experience is presented to as to induce a predictable and common reaction across the population? for purposes of selling ideas or products -- how capable are we of free thought in this environment?
